Embedded intelligence is the ability of a product, process or service to reflect on its own operational performance, usage load, or environment to enhance the product performance and lifetime, to increase quality or to ensure customer satisfaction. So, the intelligence is ‘embedded’ in a product, service or production line. This self-reflection, facilitated by information collected by embedded sensors, processed locally or communicated remotely for processing, must be considered from the earliest design stage. Embedded intelligence depends on a multidisciplinary approach for successful implementation.
Embedded intelligent Systems make products smarter, more interconnected, interdependent, collaborative and autonomous. They provide computing and communication, monitoring and control of physical components and processes in various applications. Harnessing these capabilities in time and across space creates applications with enormous and disruptive new functionalities with unprecedented societal impact and economic benefit for citizens and societies.
ARTEMIS Industry Association, the association that represents industry active in Embedded Intelligence, aims to consolidate the pathway for the digital revolution, enabling a more agile and shorter development cycle of Embedded Intelligent Systems through the adoption of design by composition and correct-by- construction principles. It also aims to overcome fragmentation in the European supply base for design and engineering components, systems and tools.
The digital evolution, or digitisation, is a silent revolution that is transforming our way of living and of doing business. It is a tremendous opportunity for European stakeholders active in many sectors to benefit from this transformation as users and as suppliers. Indeed “Europe’s Future is digital” – an excerpt from Commissioner Oettinger speech at the Hannover Messe 2015.
In the coming years the Industry Association will focus on providing strong technological capability over the whole value chain, thus removing barriers between application contexts to yield multi-domain, reusable components and Embedded Intelligent systems, and extend the use of digital platforms to build the stronger eco-systems that are needed to accelerate innovation and create new business models.
